Inspirational...

Inspiration is key to the mind of any designer. Here a few things that have inspired me as a person.

The Victoria and Albert museum (V&A) is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The fashion galleries are astounding, showcasing the artistic talents of the most influential designers of the 20th century.
I would recommend this museum to any person who is interested in fashion and wants to see some breathtaking articles of clothing.

Gok Wan - as I have mentioned before - is a fashion GOD! He is capable of making any person in this world into a fashion GODDESS! His TV programs 'How To Look Good Naked' and 'Gok's Fashion Fix' have been hits over here in Britain, and I can see why. Affordable, gorgeous and most of all have Gok's secret touch with accessories.

London...what can I say? My favourite place I have ever been in my life. The lights at night, the hustle and bustle of workers in the city and most importantly, THE SHOPS! Oxford Street and Regents Street are home to some of the biggest designer department stores such as House of Fraser, John Lewis and Selfridges. One of my personal favourite shops is Liberty. An old Tudor type building coming off Regent Street contains an emporium of fashion wonder. With a massive haberdashery section and all sorts of designer ranges this shop fill all your fashion dreams.

All these places have inspired me to reach deeper into fashion and persue a career in the business however hard I have to work (and I think it will be quite hard!)

The Corset through the centuries...

The corset can be described as a weapon of torture, a useful tool in fahsion or even an 'essential' but the corset has been through many adventures over the past century or so. In the late 1800s to the early 20th century the corset was just something that was expected to be in every classy womans wardorbe, but designers like Paul Poiret and Coco Chanel discarded this item of underwear. Paul Poiret, although ridiculed at first, believed in a much more loose, lower waistline to give more mobility to the active woman.

Dior New Look 1947

In Dior's New Look 1947 he re-introduces the corset that had previously be shunned by all. This had a wild effect on fashion, as in the 1953 film 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes' Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russel (who play the main chracters) are clearly wearing corsets in some of the scenes.

I think corsets can damage the body to extremes but in some outfits the corset, worn a bit looser can give a look a great effect.

The Annoyance of shoes

Jimmy Choo 24:7
Just been looking at the Jimmy Choo website http://www.jimmychoo.com/collections/choo-247/icat/247uk/ . This is the 24:7 collection which I love! Shoes are a passion of mine, which is annoying as they one the most expensive items of clothing! Vivienne Westwood's platform shoes (see right) are THE BEST shoes in the world, but I have to admit they would be a little hard to walk in!

Sometimes I think that some shoes would be better as ornaments rather than practical footwear.

Political Designers and My Story

Just listening to Dame Vivienne Westwood on Radio 4's Any Questions news panel show. She is talking about how she would become a politician just to make the world a better place and that is how all politicians should act. Lots of designers have strong political views and sometimes convey them in their collections. One example is Stella McCartney's collections using fake fur and big polar sweaters to show care for the environment.

Dame Vivienne Westwood

Just written a story in my English lesson all about a girl who wants to get into the world of fashion deisgn and makes a trip to Topshop in London and met a fashion agent. It is only the start of a story, but I enjoyed writing it even though i hate English lesssons.

Who's Your Fashion Hero?

Coco Chanel

Who's your fashion hero? Coco Chanel? Christian Dior? Yves Saint Laurent? All designers have had their contributions to the fashion world but some obviously more than others. One of my fashion heroes is Dame Vivienne Westwood. She was a rebellious punk in her early days, breaking free form the conventions of classic haute couture. In her later days she goes back to the classics with tweed and tartans in a variety of bright colours. I also adore Gok Wan's approach to fashion, as he can work wonders with any person, whatever their shape, size or budget.

The Power Of Accessories

What with the V.A.T increase over here in England the price of clothes is going to rise sharply. To crate new looks we are going to have to update new outfits using accessories. Try that skirt with a different pair of tights...or that t-shirt with a different necklace or scarf? Hats, bags, jewellery can transform an outfit and renew your style. Often accessories are easier to find at cheaper prices than clothing so you can look better for less!

My odd music tastes

The genre list on my ipod quite varied. Anything from Heavy Metal to Soundtracks Of Musicals. I thoroughly enjoy watching musicals but I also love heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden and Rainbow. (both classic rock bands, check them out) The 'Top 20' charts also interest me as I also like pop/rap/R&B mainstream music like Take That and Jay-Z and Rihanna. My friends think I am weird because I like heavy metal, but I still love their music.

I think I have altered the setting so anyone can comment, so please do!

Comic Relief and changes to the blog

This year is the year of Comic Relief and Red Nose Day on Friday the 18th of March. It seems like a long way off but for this year's Children In Need it all came around too fast for us to prepare. In Britain it is the greatest events of the charity calendar, and if there are similar things across the world then I urge you to get involved! Cake sales, sponsered walks and runs are just some of the events that take place at our school.

I have recently found that there is another blog that goes by the name of Platform Shoes. I am thinking of changing the name of this blog to be more original. I will keep you posted with any website address changes.

My Fashion Christmas

I had a great christmas this year and I was bought an amazing book called Vintage Fashion by Emma Baxter-Wright. It is very interesting as it takes you through the last century in the fashion. There are 2 other similar books called Vintage Shoes and Vintage Handbags. They are very interesting for young people intersted in fashion and wanting to know more.
I also recieved a Radley purse and a Henry Holland bag from the collection at Debenhams. They are both absolutely gorgeous and I love them.

I hope you all had a fashion-tastic christmas!
